At first glance, the Disposable Film Festival seems to exist because every film technology, just like every film genre, gets its own festival — this is a law in big cities like ours. But the DFF has something else under the hood: good films, at least good enough to require people like Dennis Klein, co-creator of The Larry Sanders Show, and Hawk Ostby, co-writer of Children of Menand Iron Man, to be included on the jury. As for what constitutes a “disposable” film, it’s all about the capture technology: Allowed devices include cell phones, security cams, screen capture software, digital still cameras, helmet cams, and what festival creators Eric Slatkin and Carlton Evans call “disposable video cameras” (for those who think $150 dropped on a Flip Mino is chump change). Tonight’s Big Event screens shorts in a variety of genres; Friday and Saturday feature filmmaker profiles, including work by New York film collective Red Bucket Films and indie guy Fritz Donnelly; and on Sunday, jury members, filmmakers, and experts talk shop in a panel discussion.
