“Below" with DJ Ron Rives by Ron NachmannEvents thrown by local crews like [Kontrol] and Dirtybird have revived the techno scene in the Bay Area, and Fiction is putting down its footprint with "Below," a night hosting Brooklyn-based veteran producer and DJ Rob Rives. Though best known as head engineer for Francois K's vaunted house and tech label Wave, Rives has released tons of thumping tunes under guises like Floppy Sounds and remixed the likes of Kraftwerk, Underworld, Can, and Yoko Ono. Patterns — an anthology of opaque tracks he produced under his Phantom Power moniker for the Clicktracks label — proves him a master of the minimalist, alienated sound of New York City techno.
