In the Pool

Terence Davies' new, offbeat film is a semi-abstract edit of found footage on a subject both personal and (we use this word with care) universal: Liverpool, home. "We love the place we hate, then hate the place we love. We leave the place we love, then spend a lifetime trying to regain it," the filmmaker narrates, over clips of nuns, bombs, children playing in filth among row houses. Home is a time, not a place, and Davies outlines his with gorgeous grainy old black-and-white, sentimental but clear-eyed narration, and a soundtrack free of you know who.
