In 1984, a surge of media attention fell on homeless children via Life magazine and an Academy Award-nominated documentary called Streetwise. YouTube shows that it is excellent; thus it is also shockingly horrifying. Kids 12, 13, 14 years old and living on the street were swelling in numbers in the Northwest at that time, for some reason, and one of them was Justin Reed Early. In Streetchild: An Unpaved Passage, the now-successful and relatively healthy man tells the story of his sketchy young life -- he emphasizes the value of non-profit health workers and their empathy and help.
