The Tour of California's route changes every year, in the tradition of European pro cycling events. This is the tour's first year on what seems like an obvious stretch of highway: It's crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. Bike racing is an inherently photogenic sport, and the castles and farmlands of Europe are a big part of watching the older tours and giros. But today San Francisco responds in picturesque kind: Suck International Orange, Alpe d'Huez! We'll have our eyes on two-time Tour of California champion and local hero Levi Leipheimer.

The tour starts at 8:30 a.m. in Sausalito and heads for Santa Cruz.
