What does it take to bring Jana Drakka and Nina Hartley together? Alcohol, for one, but also charity: Both are on tap at literary event The Priest and the Porn Star. Scottish-born Drakka runs the Jana Drakka Ministry in the Tenderloin, which reaches out to the disenfranchised with meditation and Buddhist thought. Hartley, on the other hand, got her start at the Mitchell Brothers' O'Farrell Theater as a stripper, and went on to become an internationally known porn star and sex-positive feminist. The whip-smart (pun mostly intended) Hartley defies tired stereotypes of sex workers, just as Drakka doesn’t play the role of stodgy spiritual authority. In her blog, Drakka declares some of her favorite films to be the dark, ABBA-soaked Muriel’s Wedding and "all John Waters." (Perhaps Hartley and Drakka should consider hosting a film series?) The two deliver spoken performances, and music is provided by New Wave/punk tribute band the Shakespearos.
