Early this month, the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls started the season off by mud wrestling to raise money. Now, they finally lace up their skates and hit the flat track. The league, which is just as punk rock as you think it is, has three local teams: the San Francisco ShEvil Dead, the Oakland Outlaws, and the Richmond Wrecking Belles; today, the match is ShEvil vs. Outlaws. Obviously we’re rooting for the local girls, but we’d be more than okay with an upset — the only thing better than seeing a roller girl happy is seeing one pissed (or in the mud; the next fund-raiser happens July 17). The league is full of nicknames and tattoos and great artwork, but it’s also intensely real, with all the proper positions (pivots, blockers, lead jammers) and wounds to satisfy any grizzled Bay Bomber in attendance.
