Whether via MTV's Cribs or that traveling exhibit of cadavers, we know your average human is interested in interiors, and how they fit with exteriors. The artist’s mind has always been a subject of (largely psychological) investigation, and now we can physically enter the encasement: the artist's home. "Inside/Outside" invites the viewer to investigate a fairly broad notion of “artist’s space” by offering several incarnations of artists’ personal surroundings. Featured is a reconstruction of Mike Shine’s Art Shack, originally crafted in Bolinas, in which a concoction of skate and surf culture relics and iconography nestle among a reference library and ripe-for-a-comeback driftwood art. Audiences are invited to make themselves at home, nose around in the books and shelves, and even sit down and read or work on a zine (if that’s your jam). Other artists include local Megan Wilson, who shows documentation of her “Home 1996-2008” project, in which she covered her apartment in designs and materials that surrounded her in her childhood home. Sam Rodia’s Watts Towers, Grandma Prisbrey’s Bottle Village, and work by Creative Growth artists Jacob Sockness and Merritt Wallace also appear. Opening night features an artist talk with Shine and Wilson, moderated by independent curator Natasha Boas.
