Primal Sloganeering

Primal Scream founder Bobby Gillespie is a master of sloganeering — he's a much better interview subject than lyricist. Fortunately for him, in the hype-driven musical universe of Britain and Anglophilia, self-promotion is more than enough ground to build a career upon (see also: Sex Pistols). Each Primal Scream album sounds totally different from its immediate predecessor, and each is a small masterpiece of boneheaded enthusiasm. The band nudged greatness on 1991's Screamadelica and hit a second career peak on the speed-fried, hostile XTRMNTR in 2000. Their latest effort, the poppy Beautiful Future, isn't out in America yet, despite cameos from Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme and Lovefoxxx of CSS. Like Primal Scream's discography, the band's live show is almost certain to be memorable, for good or ill.
