Signal interruptions, distortion errors, glitches — these are all bad things, right? Not if you were to judge by the epileptic electronica of Richard Devine. A cybernetic brain-zap of spazzy rhythms and unidentifiable digital skrizz, Devine's music sounds like Aphex Twin and Autechre having a laptop fight while racing motorcycles through a sewer. It's alternately gleaming and rusted, charged with energy but threatening to decay into entropic chaos at any moment. Alas, Devine can't pack his racks of cephalopodic modular synths in carry-on luggage, so his live setup is usually a MacBook plus some controllers, and he repurposes his beats for funkier (i.e., less insane) dancefloor appeal. Call it "psycho-crunk."
