Art Is Not a Crime
Nothing says Friday night like an art party, and the "Skate This Art" Artist Reception and Film Screening takes (ollies?) it higher than your standard wine-and-cracker-assortment affair. An auction on May 8 offered originally designed skateboards by more than 50 artists, with proceeds benefiting Roaddawgz, a homeless youth drop-in center in the Tenderloin. Tonight’s artists’ reception includes a free screening of Patrick O'Neil’s Yaa Girls and the Deadly Sparks, a documentary about an all-female skate gang rolling around San Francisco in the early ’80s. We’re imagining a Bay Area Dogtown in which the awesomely talented Peggy Oki has help carrying the lady flag. And with organizations such as Skate Like a Girl growing in San Francisco and beyond, as well as 10 new skate parks planned for San Francisco (and more than 20 in the greater Bay Area), it’s a great time to brush up on local skate history. Grab a board and land a switch hard flip to nose manual to 180 late flip out — or just hoist a glass of wine and soak up the creativity.
