Girl Scout

It’s like if Bjork were a tomboy hick — Scout Niblett is British, but if she weren’t, she’d make a great American. Indie-rock’s scruffy goofball diva puts out raw, intense, bloozy pop songs — love songs, lots of them — entirely relieved of sentimentality and cliché. Niblett’s music is hard to put in a genre besides indie, because it’s too odd for anything else. But, for example, fans of Belle and Sebastian would find her loud and grating, while Neurosis fans might think she’s totally girly. For Penelope Houston fans, however, Niblett is just right, ditto lovers of the Blow, because ol’ Scout falls dead between Bright Eyes and the Finches, most of the time. And every once in a while (“My Beloved”) she channels Sinead O’Connor, if Sinead O’Connor were a tomboy hick.
