Animal Collective makes sound behave in a multiplicity of ways, simultaneously. The band doesn't write "songs" as much as it crafts ecstatic moods and colorful musical textures. Given this proclivity for the conceptual, it's striking how cohesive its material ends up feeling. On its latest release, Merriweather Post Pavilion, the group stretches further into the musical ether, evoking a resounding sense of sonic wonder. "My Girls" sparkles with shimmery synths and the Collective's signature choral reverie. Elsewhere, as on "Brother Sport," the vocals provide an anchor, moving in a circular, pulsing arc like an ocean swell. Few modern acts are more adept at occupying the territory between indie pop and ambient electronics.
