"Apocalypse Night"By Hiya SwanhuyserPublished on June 04, 2009 at 4:20amWe know you're waiting for The Road to come out. It has a soundtrack by Nick Cave and stars the divine Viggo Mortensen; we don't blame you. In the meantime, though, a local group of science fiction lovers called SF in SF screen two postapocalyptic treats at "Apocalypse Night". First up is The Quiet Earth, which features a man realizing he's the last human on Earth. It's an unlikely scenario, but rich with philosophical implications. Next is a towering classic of epic proportions: On the Beach. This 1950s submarine-based thriller finds Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, Anthony Perkins, and Gregory Peck staring down the horror of a slowly approaching lethal cloud of nuclear radiation from a recently detonated bomb. All life on Earth outside of Australia has been obliterated by it, and it most certainly will get our heroes too. Should they commit suicide? This is a far more realistic possibility, and will probably make you cry angry bitter tears. You'll love it!
