Johnny Comes MarchingBy Hiya SwanhuyserPublished on June 20, 2009 at 4:27amWe predict the good people at the Trans March (June 26 rally starts 3 p.m., march starts 7 p.m. at Dolores Park, www.transmarch.org) will win the queer popularity contest this year: They have Chastity Bono! Or Chaz Bono, as the transitioning Cher-child is now known. Celebrity spokespeople may be slightly corny, but to a group still medically categorized as diseased (grow the fuck up, DSM!), the accompanying visibility is welcome, overdue, etc. The Trans also usually has the best fashion of the three major marches. Wake up and do it all over again at the Dyke March (June 27, rally starts 3 p.m., march starts 7 p.m. at Dolores Park, www.thedykemarch.org), which was 200,000 strong last we heard, and that's 100 percent pure lesbian. Supportive (read: jealous) males are once again warmly invited to cheer from the sidelines, as much as they may want to be a part of the parade that often starts with Dykes on Bikes, moves on to dykes on bicycles, next features dykes with tykes, and finally becomes a massively politicized sexy party. Today, all of the above plus their gay man friends turn out for the way-famous San Francisco Pride Parade. Streets are closed, hotels are mobbed, costumery is flaunted, the world comes to visit us, and minds are changed for the gayer.
