Drink Up

Some songs make you laugh. Other songs make you cry. “Our Lips Are Sealed” makes you gay. As does “True Colors” and “I Will Survive,” and so much by Madonna. “Maria” from The Sound of Music certainly makes you gay, no big deal there, as does Elton John’s “Daniel.” But how about Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” and David Bowie’s “Lady Stardust”? They make you gay. “Secret Love” by Doris Day? Makes you gay. Noel Coward’s “Mad About the Boy”? Makes you gay — in fact, way gay. These songs, and many more like them (think not only “Friends” by Bette Midler but also “Frenchette” by David Johansen) are Songs to Make You Gay, which is also the title of Connie Champagne’s new cabaret, featuring a set list with the power to rearrange chromosomes. The theme came about when the local entertainer, famously known for playing Judy Garland on theater and cabaret stages, found herself browsing the Internet and came across one of those lovely Christian sites warning parents against certain music, lest their children listen to it and become homosexuals. Champagne was aghast. What a set list!
