Pentagram was arguably the lone American contemporary of Black Sabbath during the early 1970s that dealt in the same sludgy riffs and monolithic menace. Built around the dark songwriting and distinctive vocals of founder Bobby Liebling, the unsung Virginia-based band released several pulverizing singles and could've become one of the era's true giants had it gotten signed by a major label. Instead, he built a growing cult of fans with a rotating cast of players and stayed true to his original, doom-laden vision.
