To Cast a Predator
Just plane offensive: Come on now, guys! Were all of the editor-types asleep at the wheel when dreaming up the composition of the "Predators Are Free to Move About the Cabin" cover [Ashley Harrell, Feature, 7/15]? Who was the creative genius who came up with the idea of featuring a black man's hand to represent the boogeyman who taps into one of society's darkest fears, that of the predatory pederast?
To the contrary, isn't the profile of the "typical" pedophile offender, like the known serial killers, a white man? To blindly typecast the black man as the generalized criminal offender is inexcusably ignorant in this day and age — and by an "alternative" publication, no less!
Why didn't the hand model balk at the scenario into which he was cast? Can we aim for raising consciousness instead of lazily reinforcing the status quo? Get with it, y'all.
Editor's note: Jackson Senyonga, the primary subject of the story (and against whom legal action is being taken), is black.
Don't Judge a Facebookby Its Cover
A network error has occurred: It's funny that someone would call Facebook's layout "user-friendly" and call MySpace "cluttered," because I feel it's the exact opposite ["GhettoSpace," Lauren Gard, Sucka Free City, 7/15].
MySpace is simple, straightforward, and easy to use, and as an added bonus you can add color and personality to your page. On Facebook, I have to spend seven minutes just trying to figure out how to upload a picture, and it's not just me — my computer whiz boyfriend thinks it's poorly designed as well. This is not to say I'm not on Facebook: All my high school friends are there, so I signed up to keep in contact with them, but I still check MySpace more than Facebook.
Fair-weather Facebook friends: MySpace is losing users to Facebook because of the shady ads, fake profiles, spyware infestations, and various other issues. The person in this article is correct. MySpace is the ghetto of social networking.
Not to mention you have to wait for what seems like an eternity for some users' pages to load because of videos, music players, and all types of apps they have on their pages. I have accounts with both sites, but only check MySpace periodically. I figure that in another year Facebook will be in the same boat and everyone will jump ship again for a newer, better social networking site anyway.
No Pity for Deportee
If you can't do the time: I, for one, am glad to see SFPD finally doing something about the stolen property that is being sold on Market Street ["Sanctuary Abatement Operation," Lauren Smiley, News, 7/8]. Hey, too bad for the guy who may get shipped back to Honduras, but he took his chances and lost. You break the law, you're supposed to go to jail.
My girlfriend had her computer jacked (grabbed) while she was working on it at a coffee shop in the Mission. Three hours later, she got a call from a friend who was watching the guy who robbed her trying to sell the computer at the corner of Market and Mason streets. We went down there to look for her computer. When we arrived, we were approached by no less than six or seven guys trying to sell us stolen goods or drugs. There was not one police car in a mile radius of this street corner. We had to leave because we were worried that we were going to get jacked ourselves. We never got her computer back.
So if this guy got caught in some police sting and has to go back to Honduras as a result of being arrested, so be it. He could always come back later the same way he did the first time. If you don't do the crime, you won't have to worry about doing the time.
