"Love" for Sale

Although it seems like whoring is all anybody talks about anymore, sex work sensationalism from breathless mainstream media begs for a clear-eyed literary antidote here and there. Enter Hos, Hookers, Call-Girls and Rent Boys: Prostitutes Writing on Sex, Love, Work and Money. Born of a weekly writers’ workshop at local nonprofit SAGE (Standing Against Global Exploitation), the book offers a stunning collection of stories from folks who have sold their sex for cash. It’s edited by David Henry Sterry, who, along with R.J. Martin Jr., brought in a dazzling array of participants from all walks of life: from Ph.Ds to high school dropouts, soccer moms to street hustlers, top-shelf call girls to 10-dollar crack whores. This kaleidoscopic portrait of sex work in America is all the more striking for its breadth; it also features contributions from sex activist Candye Kane and girls from the first-ever National Summit of Commercially Sexually Exploited Youth.
