Wait, do you know this guy? Don’t worry, it isn't a one-night stand come back to haunt you. Well, maybe it is, but it’s more likely you know Isaac Fitzgerald from one of his past lives at iconic Mission District haunts 826 Valencia and Zeitgeist. (One caters to children, the other to adult children.) A talented storyteller, he’s also the managing editor of local online literary magazine The Rumpus. The site throws cultural fetes dubbed The Monthly Rumpus, and Fitzgerald helms August’s offering. His seaworthy shipmates include Bay Area–born Steve Almond, whose four books include My Life in Heavy Metal, a compendium of stories about music and screwing whose characters’ romantic fumblings are so painfully realized they'll make most readers wince in self-recognition. Joining the fray are buzz-generating S.F.-based authors Skip Horack, Katie Crouch, and Joshua Mohr, while DJ Real plays music and Wholphin screens a short film. Yo-yo genius Doctor Popular also performs. This is no school-assembly yo-yo-er who walks the dog and reminds kids to drink milk and stay off drugs. If ever a movie were made about a hostage negotiator who disarms gunmen with a yo-yo, Doctor Popular would be the star.
