At "El Grito de la Misión," teen artists show their work — you know how rare teen artwork is these days? It's about as common as a Mensa birther. Art instruction in schools is way, way down, so a local nonprofit art gallery stepped in, and a small horde of students got to spend the summer working with professional artists. Rodney Ewing led the kids through visual self-definition via the "10 Card" method, which looks hard at basic but important personal information like fingerprints. Ariel Roman looked at different types of landscapes with them, and Nicole Lattuca ran performance art workshops — the gallery's Web site shows a photo of teens in a cage, which is half funny and half scary. The theme of the summer was "Expanding the Box," and the exhibition shows the good that can come from encouraging los jovenes to be creative.
