This is big. The Jazz Mafia is a coordinating, cooperating conglomeration of bands equaling roughly 50 people. Its prolific, inspired mix of jazz and hip-hop led to the creation of a sort of jazz-hop opera called Brass, Bows, and Beats, performed only a very few times before, starring Lyrics Born; a new incarnation plays Yoshi's Aug. 20-22. A teeming scene like this is bound to grow shoots, and at "The Art and Photography of the Jazz Mafia," visual artists in the band and around the band exhibit related work. Suzie Ferras' thoughtful drawings, Ezra Li Eismont's cartoon-inspired paintings, and a slew of live performance photos are just some of the art at this sprawling show.
