Local choreographer Liss Fain is known for her love of weird music. She’s BFF with the compositions of Eastern European protopunk/experimento-classical composer György Ligeti, who is often used in Kubrick films, to give you an idea of how uncuddly his music is. For this, we salute you, Fain! But dance is for watching as well as listening, and incredibly, Fain’s jagged, repeating shapes match and push against the music in a way we could eat with a spoon. Her pas de deux work is especially strong: We never thought we’d say a company had “cool lifts,” but this one does. LFD performs contemporary dance, but it’s closely related to formal traditions: To us the work often looks like ballet done right for once; without pointe shoes. At the Liss Fain Dance Home Season, the company reprises Unknown Land, a Ligeti-scored joint, and presents the premiere of Out of the Silence. The Lublin Dance Theatre from Poland is a guest presence, with its theater-inspired, contact-improv–driven new work, Into the Good Silence.
