Sprawling Brooklyn outfit the Phenomenal Handclap Band may touch on the neo–No Wave thump popularized by DFA Records, but the eclectic octet draws on a far wider spectrum of influences. The band's self-titled debut reveals echoes of Giorgio Moroder's throbbing Italo-disco epics and Gary Wright's synth-driven, space-funk nuzzling fuzzed-out guitars and intricate, Rotary Connection–style arrangements. Armed with an arsenal of analog keyboard sounds, heavy percussion, and a pair of sassy, tambourine-shaking female vocalists, the group crams onto a tiny Mission District stage to unleash its unique dancefloor rock.
