We see the joy of drinking sake overcome many a Bay Area alcohol- and raw-fish enthusiast, and who wouldn’t want to elevate their pursuit? Ours is a town with plenty of room for more connoisseurs of anything. We like our experts. Earlier in the year, 10 judges from Japan and the United States critiqued 300 sake contestants at the 2009 U.S. National Sake Appraisal in Hawaii, and the top-ranked labels are offered at annual Joy of Sake tastings held in Honolulu, New York City, and San Francisco. Our edition features 100 bottles in a jazz club, many of which are not available in the U.S., accompanied by bites from chef Shotaro “Sho” Kamio. Treats such as short ribs, tempura fritters, American Kobe beef tri-tip, and a sashimi station mean the winning sakes have yet more competition.
