Boasting a dozen members, L.A.'s Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros conjure ambitious swaths of barefoot psychedelia that rival the Polyphonic Spree in uplifting breadth. It's all the brainchild of Alex Ebert, who sang for major-label also-rans Ima Robot. Musical alias firmly in place, Ebert has already taken his new act to Europe, where Rough Trade released its swollen, anachronistic debut, Up from Below. Highlights include the Sergio Leone–referencing "Desert Song," the feel-good single "40 Day Dream," and the back-porch love-in "Home."
