Mary Anne HobbsBy Ron NachmannPublished on September 03, 2009 at 4:00pmIt's full-circle time for BBC Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs when it comes to visiting the West Coast. The vaunted U.K.-born veteran DJ first made her name in 1985 when she skipped off to L.A. to report on the thrash-metal scene. On returning to London, Hobbs spent the next couple of decades following her hardcore muse into experimental beat music. She used her simply named Experimental radio show to enthusiastically champion British dubstep and eventually the West's new avant-beatmakers like L.A.'s Flying Lotus and S.F.'s Lazer Sword. Her new Planet Mu compilation, Wild Angels, features groundbreaking gems from vet Mark Pritchard and dark funk from newcomers Teebs and Untold.
