Trannies of the High Seas

Wednesday, Sep 16 2009
Trannyshack may have closed its doors as a weekly club after more than a decade of blending high and low art in pantyhose, but that doesn’t mean mistress of ceremonies Heklina has been resting on her foam-padded behind. Far from it: Between tapings of the TV show Trauma (she plays an MC in Liza Minnelli drag for the Halloween episode) and hosting performance blowout revivals like the recent Björk Tribute, the lady has decided to bring back one of the most storied parties of the club’s heyday, the SS Trannyshack Boat Cruise. For the first time in six years, the three-hour tour takes the scenic route around Alcatraz and Treasure Island and under the Golden Gate Bridge, and features seaworthy stage numbers from Trannyshack legends like Kiddie, Putanesca, and Peggy L’eggs. L.A.–based electro-rock band Dirty Sanchez (staffed by drag superstar and actual opening act for Roseanne Barr’s standup comedy tour Jackie Beat, plus bandmates Mario Diaz and DJ Barbeau) enchant passengers with a high-energy live set and costume changes, while Juanita More! spins crowd-pleasing dance tunes before and after the show.

  • San Francisco Street Food Festival 2014
The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.

Thursday, August 15th marks the last concert at Candlestick Park. Who better to close out the venue than Sir Paul McCartney. Photographs by Sugarwolf.
