A little Salvador Dalí, a little collage, a little fingerpainting. Nathan Redwood's decidedly odd acrylic paintings are a mixed bag in the best sense: jumbled landscapes of urban detritus and bubbling junk, everything held in some invisible force field against brooding stormy skies. In the past, he has combined a sense of mechanical detail with cartoonish humor, creating anthropomorphic forms out of dancing manhole covers, cardboard boxes, body parts, and hoes. Redwood's newest work moves out of the street and further into the creature realm. In his current exhibit, "On a Neck," his swirly lines look more organic than ever, lending corporeality to figures that, if they aren't exactly human, are humanlike. He's spilling out toward the abstract in these pieces, and yet they portray a personality that makes them even more approachable than his past work. One of these days, you feel, Redwood's figures will coalesce into a golem, made of fingerpaint and inspiration.
