2/3 It, 1/3 Us

Three photographers make the old new, the destructive creative, and the bad good at "Lightning, Lava, and Bombs." Ben Nixon, Hendrik Paul, and Susan Seubert use ye olde techniques on unmitigated disasters, and the results please us greatly. The misfortunes of the exhibition's title are celebrated in images made with, among other photographic processes, "silver gelatin, platinum, tintype, and wet plate collodion," as Seubert's Web site puts it. Some of the most arresting pieces are Seubert's images of nuclear explosions, a series called "Bombs in a Box (tic-tac-toe)." The mushroom clouds appear to have been photographed before atom bombs were invented; Seubert sourced archival pictures and rephotographed them into some very lush and thought-provoking art.

An opening reception for "Lightning, Lava, and Bombs" starts at 6 p.m.
