“Shared Legacies” reunites mentor Sara Shelton Mann and past protégés, including dance/music duo La Alternativa (formerly MOTIONLAB). La Alternativa choreographer Kathleen Hermesdorf and composer Albert Mathias first met Mann in 1994 while in her wild-child company, Contraband, which also drew in the much-coveted talents of light and visual designer Elaine Buckholtz. For the “Shared Legacies” collaboration, Hermesdorf, Mathias, and Buckholtz have teamed up again to create the other edge of there is here, an exploration in dislocation complete with moving surfaces, speakers, and lights. Meanwhile, Mann has partnered with media artist David Szlasa to make Shapeshifter, an investigation into what it means to exist within simultaneous but conflicting realities. To drive home the point, projections of the choreography captured by three onstage cameras accompany the live dancing.
