More About

New York City funk-metal band Living Colour was arguably the most successful black rock group of its era, taking over MTV in the late '80s with politically themed songs from its Epic debut Vivid. Though follow-up Time's Up won great reviews, the band's commercial appeal subsided, and Living Colour eventually lost its record deal. After a pair of long hiatuses, the group is back with a solid fifth album, The Chair in the Doorway, an '80s-pop-metal–tinged work that minimizes the revolutionary rhetoric and focuses on the members' personal evolutions. Anchored by Doug Wimbish's dominant bass lines and Vernon Reid's guitar-god riffs, the album focuses the group's struggles over the years. Through it all, Living Colour's passion for the genre it helped found is clearly still present.
