It's useless describing A Place to Bury Strangers without mentioning the volume. The New York trio has repeatedly been called that city's loudest band, and it relishes such infamy. That heady crush of noise fits the music all too well, since it maximizes the fuzz, drone, and jangle of the Jesus and Mary Chain while occupying a lurid new realm of shoegaze. Pedal effects aside, the rhythm section looks to New Order, and frontman Oliver Ackermann offers clear, casual vocals that often succeed in penetrating the din.
