El Superritmo
Cheap drinks, hot music, and an unpretentious crowd that gets busy on the dancefloor: That's what you'll find every Saturday night at El Superritmo, a Latin music night hosted by cumbia enthusiasts El Kool Kyle and Roger Más. In addition to dusty gems from their deep record crates, their music selection also includes hip-hop remixes, a touch of reggaetón, and the occasional special guest MC or DJ.
Sweater Funk
On Sunday nights for the past year, a potent funk has been brewing in a Chinatown basement. DJs at the weekly party "Sweater Funk," held downstairs at Li Po Lounge, spin soulful disco and R&B jams from the late '70s and early '80s for a crowd of revelers determined to stretch out the last grooves of the weekend.
Tormenta Tropical
When it comes to showcasing innovative Latin American music in the Bay Area, Tormenta Tropical has it on lock. DJs Disco Shawn and Oro11 will soon hit their second anniversary of cranking a monthly blend of cumbia electro, baile breakbeat, and technofied sonidera to a crowd of cumbia maniacs, reggaetón fans, and curious hipsters. Beyond the club night, this spring the boys dropped the fifth artists' EP — this one by Mexican producer Toy Selectah — on their Tormenta-associated label Bersas Discos.
