In the fall of 1978, Neil Young's rather prosperous '70s came to a heartrending halt when his son was born with cerebral palsy. Neil coped, as he puts it, by "shutting it down totally." Wife Pegi coped by co-founding the Bridge School in Hillsborough, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children with severe impairments. Since 1986, the Youngs have curated annual concerts to benefit the school. As a practice, but certainly not a rule, participants perform with acoustic instruments. This year's diverse event will feature, among others, Jimmy Buffett, Sheryl Crow, Fleet Foxes, and supergroup Monsters of Folk comprising My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Conor Oberst, and Bright Eyes' Mike Mogis.
