Knives Out

Last month, a hotshot New York chef said something about figs on a plate and San Francisco, and our local foodies shat themselves. It was awful. It was beautiful. It gave us something to talk about. Today, that same hotshot comes to the city to promote his new book, and people are breathless. Will some halfwit serve him a platter of figs? Probably. Will someone else just glare at him from across the street, chain-smoking, dressed as a huge fig? We hope so. But forget all that: Chef David Chang, his multiple restaurants, and now his book, Momofuku, are all hugely important to food, regardless of his opinions about our local menus. Today, he’s arming himself not with knives but with chef Jeremy Fox of Napa’s Ubuntu, and the two will talk food. Moderating the event will be New York Times Magazine columnist and Momofuku co-author Peter Meehan — it’s his job to touch on Fig-gate and prompt the chef to smile for the scandal-hungry food bloggers.
