The term "hanging bag" evokes a number of images. For us, at least. "Window box" is less colorful, but surprisingly, it can mean almost the same thing: People grow food in both. Horticulturist and former Strybing Arboretum honcho Fred Bove explains why — and how — at a talk called "Gardening in Small, Urban Spaces." Some of you probably live in large urban spaces, but for most of us, this advice is exactly what we need. With an emphasis on low-cost and low-maintenance projects, Bove insists that lots of veggies can be had from nooks and crannies. It sounds too good to be true, but we happen to have a next-door neighbor who keeps boasting about his tiny container garden on a minuscule back stoop, and how delicious the salads are that come out of it. He says things like, "All I can think about is how to get another container." Maybe he needs a hanging bag?
