Oh You Pretty Things

Old people who think young people are incurable lazybones who have so much time on their hands they can't do anything, not even fully wake up, are getting ammunition in a sticky trend in photography. Usually these works feature pale young things in odd clothes (this is us avoiding the word hipster) doing not so much of anything -- lying on beds, swinging on rope swings, holding mayonnaise jars, or just standing around looking like they're about to fall down or have a threesome. The generally sense is, tomorrow? Screw tomorrow! We’re young and there’s a band to see and a convenience store to take pictures of our feet in! We love these photographs. The best turn out raw and unflinching and real, capturing the revolutionary act of being a wayward 24; the works of Sandy Kim, in both her new book Sandy Kim and the book release exhibit of the same name, are especially real – she has a thing for blood, sadness, nakedness, and headstands. She also has a thing for bands, so often the people in her photos that a grandmother would tsk at are doing pretty well for themselves, especially the local band Girls, which is currently exploding all over the place like frontman Christopher Owens’ hair. Kim photographs Girls a lot; she shot the band’s press pics and its recent tour in Europe. Owens is in the book, looking gangly, tired, dapper, and heartbreaking, sometimes all at once. There’s also pictures of tattooed people jumping in a lake, and lots of beautifully wasted stuff like that.

A release party for Sandy Kim starts at 6 p.m. on Dec. 3.
