More About

Vic Chesnutt's sense of self is as unsteady as a drunk on Sunday morning. In his songs, the Southern singer-songwriter veers rambunctiously from searing declarations ("I am not a victim ... I'm an atheist!") to dismal self-reflection ("I'm a cheap, spent shell/And a biohazard"). Joined by Guy Picciotto (Fugazi) and members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Thee Silver Mt. Zion, Chesnutt's most recent work (2007's North Star Deserter and 2009's At the Cut) blends post-rock, tattered folk, and Southern soul into something rather gothic and theatrical. The band creates a stage of sorts for Chesnutt to perform his lyrics rather than just sing them.
