Virginal Christmas Improv

A lo-fi, behind-the-scenes–style YouTube video by local improv troupe Technically Virgins shows the comedy crew taking their artistic duties very seriously. Congregating oceanside at the break of dawn, the performers take turns donning a white wedding dress and splashing around in the icy surf, vamping, puckering, and writhing in the wet sand for the camera. All of this is set to the song “I’ll Make Love to You” by Boyz II Men to sublimely ridiculous effect. Born in part from the improv classes at Bay Area Theatresports, this team of pranksters began proving their stage mettle with a handful of well-attended shows in the Mission earlier this year (including a pre-Halloween event titled The Pregnancy Scare). Committed to the quick-witted scenes that make good improv players such a pleasure to watch, Technically Virgins now presents An XXX-Mas to Remember, an adult-themed Christmas special filled with chestnut-roasting, Tannenbaum-toppling possibilities. Expect to see skits emerge from the bizarre subconscious material surrounding the holidays and sex, along with those nuggets of the psychotic, the commonplace, and the random that give improv the time-honored element of surprise.

Phish is in the midst of a block of sold out shows at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (October 27-29). The Monday night concert featured a rare first set opener of “Walfredo” with the band members switching instruments for the song. The evening’s highlights included John Fishman and his iconic vacuum cleaner solo and favorites such as Chalk Dust Torture, Slave to the Traffic Light, Axilla, Rift, 2001 Space Odyssey, and Maze. The show also featured Phish’s debut of a, seemingly impromptu, version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” to with roaring approval of the, singing along, crowd. With Game 6 being tonight, partying Phish fans will join Giants fans in Civic Center Plaza where there will be a World Series viewing party on a large screen set up by the City.
