When a local nonprofit hell-bent on building social consciousness through digital culture decides to open up a product-focused space supporting designers of sustainability-minded wearables, the world becomes richer not only in hyphenated words, but also in clothes. Broadcast, a shopping and fashion preview event meant to showcase the wares and talents of designers represented in the nonprofits new boutique, features the finished products of many a fashion-forward cottage industrialist. Whether its a frock inspired by playful Scandinavian melancholy and created by Sofie Ølgaard; an angular fur felt or fish skin hat from Jasmin Zorlu Millinery; or one of the hand-dyed, vegetable-tanned, solar-powered bags from Noon Solar, the fashionable bits and pieces on display look to the future without quite being a spherical, space-age Lady Gaga helmet. This evening of perusing the pants and bracelets and satchels of emerging talents unfolds to the music of DJs Fluid and Conor, who add a futuristic touch to holiday gift-buying.
