It’s a wonderful story: A patriarch of a respectable French family dies, the family noses around the attic, and 30 reels of porn from the turn of the century are uncovered. The family blanches, then calls the National Film Archive, and a worldwide art-house cult film is born. It’s great because porn didn’t exist in the turn of the century, at least not the kind of porn we're used to, where money is the prime motivator. Rather, the porn in The Good Old Naughty Days is what people who made conventional films did on their days off, for the pleasure of all: They would hire prostitutes, raid the costume closet, get screaming drunk (we’re guessing), and film themselves having a gay old time -- and by “gay” we mean happy and carefree, like the Abbott who buggers the boy watching two nuns get down on an altar. The Good Old Naughty Days is strong stuff, but, thankfully, the reel with the duck has been left out by the film’s producer, Michel Reilhac. But not the reel with the dog. The dog stays in the picture.
