Actors don’t need sets anymore — all they need is a screen and an Internet-enabled doohickey. In the International Theater Company’s production of The Nose, for example, the main character describes a man walking down Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, and the screen, on cue, takes the dizzying satellite-to-Earth trip we all know and love so well. Zoom! Space to Nevsky Prospekt, complete with pop-up tourist photographs. Actor, adapter, and director Oleg Liptsin teams with software guy Kevin Quennesson to make the stage magic happen — other tricks include weird interactions with the screen, innovative projection techniques, and something called “body tracking software.” But this is still theater, and all the gadgetry goes to highlighting the wit and poetry of the playwright, Nicolay Gogol — who wrote The Nose in 1836, well before iPhones.
