Did We Say It’s Psychedelic?

At first glance, Maya Hayuk’s art might make you timid: Her bold, colorful graphic shapes hint at an earlier era, when abstract art was a confusing thing for serious people to sort out by yelling at one another. Then you might come across a strange little bubby psychedelic space-alien thingy and exclaim, “O Hai Adam Lambert!” Because the aquatic, psychedelic space-alien thingy has the American Idol hero’s name written across its chest in a rudimentary alphabet, right where a necklace would be. And that’s when it hits you: Maya Hayuk has a sense of humor. Also: Check the titles for clues. The Lambert alien is called All in Harmony: Adam Lambert. A work of strong, drippy horizontal lines is titled Sexy Hamburger — wry giggle — and the four works in Mushrooms I-IV look not only like magic mushrooms but magic mushroom planets (stoner high-five). Another piece in Hayduk's exhibit, “Feeling Space,” resembles paper cutouts of a psychedelic tree canopy filled with uncategorized, psychedelic fauna, but if you close one eye and imagine you’re high, it might be a jeweled, psychedelic Day of the Dead skull. It’s called Chandelier. We’re going with the Day of the Dead skull. Who wants to yell at us?
