Girls, the biggest S.F. indie band to blow up last year, are hyped for good reason. The band's jangly, sun-faded pop songs, which shine from the yearning soul of singer-songwriter Christopher Owens, pluck heartstrings as they please eardrums. His voice sounds like a smoked-out Elvis Costello, but Girls' familiar reverb-rock owes as much to the Beach Boys. Owens' frank lyrics confess depths of anguish: Few could get away with chirping, "It isn't right to sit around/and think about the awful things that get you down" without coming off like Tony Robbins, but when he does, you have to agree.
