Every town has its share of big butch daggers with swaggers, and a pulp-novel-style view into their misadventures can only be good triangulating fun. Legendary lesbo writer Ann Bannon first brought her team of gay gals (and one gay guy handy with zingers) to the page in the 1950s, from the midst of an unhappy marriage and a sexuality that was celebrated only in very tiny circles of underground friends. Tonight’s staging of The Beebo Brinker Chronicles, a play written by Kate Moira Ryan and Linda S. Chapman, condenses three of Bannon’s books: I Am a Woman, Women in the Shadows, and Journey to a Woman. The show’s New York run, first off-off- and then off-Broadway, repeatedly sold out, and delighted the crap out of reviewers and regular people alike. Expect playful enactments of a repressed time in American history, and an intelligent relationship between cheeky melodrama and reverence for the material. Sunday’s show includes a tea party and live interview with Bannon herself.
