Someone tried to convince us recently that the Mission District in the 2010s is Paris in the 1920s. It's true that visual art, music, literature, food, drink, political thought, dance, fashion, and sex are exploding in the Mission. We're kind of buying. The quartier may only need Chinaka Hodge to cement its reputation: This new playwright is to theater glitterati Marc Bamuthi Joseph as Zelda Fitzgerald should have been to Ernest Hemingway, that is, beautiful young collaborator. Joseph directs Hodge's first solo full-length script, Mirrors in Every Corner, which examines what happens when an African-American woman gives birth to a Caucasian baby. Gertrude Stein would have been there opening night to see the stellar cast Daveed Diggs (Sidney Bechet?), hear the original score by Ambrose Akinmusire (Erik Satie), and admire Evan Bissell's (Georges Braque) set installation. The production is a copresentation of Campo Santo and the Living Word Project.
