This is a trip: Just a month separates the release of two new interpretations of Alice in Wonderland. Both rip Lewis Carroll’s tale from the imaginations of children and feed it to those of adults, where it’s been slumming ever since the first hippy took acid and announced he was going down the rabbit hole. The biggie is, of course, Tim Burton’s film, which predictably stars Johnny Depp. Less known is artist Camille Rose Garcia’s illustrative work in a new edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It offers a Goth-y take on the story, as befits her traditional style, which is a Goth-y take on creepy children living in a wasteland. There’s a lot of splattered eyeliner (and cat-, rabbit-, and guyliner), and twisted, dark, but oddly lovable scenes. It’s a version for children to avoid, teens to discover, and adults to collect.
