Any schnook can shoot lo-res video with a cellphone or Webcam, as you once demonstrated to your (or your lover’s) satisfaction (or frustration). In the hands of artists or rabid experimentalists, though, these cheap tools produce some gritty, gripping stuff. The Disposable Film Festival showcases the best work made with nonpro gear, starting Thursday with a feverish international shorts program encompassing every flavor and genre. Tonight, the spotlight shifts to Red Bucket Films, an ensemble whose feature-length sequel, Buttons, Vol. 2, documents the strange everyday moments and interludes of human life. Londoner Ben Slotover and Austrian Ben Waldeck, masters of the (still) picture story, present a decade’s worth of The Collected Works of Jim and Heinz on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by the acutely personal work of New York filmmaker, animator, and performance artist Alex Itin at 3:30. The weekend wraps with a free filmmaking workshop (Sunday at noon) led by Vimeo maven Blake Whitman. Rank amateurism has limited charm, after all.
