Rally Cheap

If you'd never heard of the Monster Drawing Rally, and were asked to guess what the event entailed, you might think it's when a bunch of people get together and draw things that haunt your dreams: spiders, Bigfoot, Chupacabra, clowns. But maybe you're an art lover of humble means, and what haunts your dreams is the high price tag of original art. You give your heart away every time you see a lovely painting, and the $14,000 price tag swiftly breaks it. Well, fear no more. The Monster Drawing Rally is more than a damn good party: It's a chance to buy affordable art. Artists sign up for the event and, 30 at a time, take turns creating masterpieces during one of four hour-long shifts. Southern Exposure provides the space and tools, and proceeds benefit the arts organization. Once the pieces are finished, attendees scoop them up, starting at $60. We're not talking unknowns here. You want an original creation from All Over Coffee's Paul Madonna? He's here. While you wait for your piece to go on sale, devour curbside tacos and dance to music provided by DJ Frau Holly. Bike parking is provided by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. Just remember: If you pedal to the party, make sure you’ve got a way to transport your purchases home on two wheels.
